Good Samaritan School updates

Posted in News

On 25 March 2010 Bishop Peter announced that the Saint Francis Xavier and Saint John Vianney schools would amalgamate, effective from the first day of the 2012 school year. This decision was made in response to the recent Federal Government BER funding as well as the changing demographics in the Wollongong area.

Mr Peter Turner, the Director of Catholic Schools, formed an Enabling Committee under the direction of Mrs Netty Broekman. The Enabling Committee has formed a number of committees to take forward the various aspects of school organisation, such as Religious Education and the Education Brief. Two public meetings have been held in which parents of children have been invited to learn about the amalgamation as well as raise issues for the Enabling Committee to pursue.

After consultation with the school communities the Enabling Committee recommended the new name “Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School serving the Greater Wollongong Area”. The Bishop accepted this recommendation. Each of the three primary schools in our pastoral region were founded by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. Recently a committee which comprised Father Ron, the school principles, staff members, parents (including the Saint Brigid’s school community) and CEO personnel met to reflect on a new school motto and school crest. These reflections will form the basis of the new school Mission Statement, school policies and school colours and uniform.

The Enabling Committee has already covered a lot of territory; there is still a lot of work to do. Parents, staff members and the CEO will continue to move forwards in shaping a new school community. Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School, along with Saint Brigid’s at Gwynneville are parish schools. They will serve the parishioners of our new Pastoral Region. In partnership with the home and the parish, our Catholic schools aim to form the whole person.

Whilst Saint Francis Xavier and Saint John Vianney schools will cease to operate at the end of 2011, the new Good Samaritan school will build on the proud traditions of the two parent schools. Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School is our parish school. We thank the Enabling Committee for the sterling work done thus far in bringing about our new school and we pray that the Committee will continue in open and consultative processes.
New Principal Announced
Mr Peter Turner, Director of Schools, announced that Mr John Walsh (Principal of Saint John Vianney’s School) will be the first principal of the Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School commencing in 2012.

We congratulate John and wish him the very best as he now takes forward the Good Samaritan dream to becoming more of a reality. It is opportune to thank Mrs Fran James for her many years of sterling service as principal of Saint Francis Xavier School at the Cathedral. Fran’s leadership has been outstanding and we wish her all the very best for the future.
